Hair loss—especially androgenetic alopecia (AGA)—has become a serious problem for hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Traditional treatments like minoxidil can help, but they may also cause unwanted side effects.
Recently, NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), a well-known molecule in the anti-aging field, has emerged as a focus of attention in the hair-growth sector. New scientific studies bring encouraging news: NMN can clearly promote hair growth, and its effect is even comparable to 5% minoxidil.
What makes NMN special is that it does not work in just one way. Instead, it improves the hair follicle environment from multiple angles, helping to reverse hair loss at its root.
So how was this impressive effect proven in the lab? Researchers published a study in the journal Molecules, using a mouse model of androgenetic hair loss (AGA). The experiments clearly showed how NMN reactivated “sleeping” hair follicles step by step.
Early results were striking:
After just 5 days of using 1% NMN, the skin on the mice’s backs started to darken; this color change is an early sign that hair follicles are leaving the resting phase and entering the growth phase.

By day 15, mice treated with NMN showed strong hair regrowth. The new hair almost completely covered the previously shaved areas, and the results were very similar to those seen with 5% minoxidil. In contrast, mice treated only with DHT still had sparse hair.
To look deeper, researchers examined skin tissue under a microscope. They found that NMN reversed hair follicle shrinkage caused by DHT and significantly increased the number, length, and thickness of hair follicles.

These animal studies clearly show that NMN can strongly activate dormant hair follicles and push them back into a healthy growth cycle.
Healthy hair depends on the health of its “engine”—the dermal papilla cells (HDPCs). If these cells are damaged or weakened, hair follicles cannot grow properly.
So is NMN safe and helpful for these cells? The answer from research is yes.
More importantly, when HDPCs were damaged by DHT and their activity dropped, NMN was able to repair this damage. The higher the NMN level, the stronger the repair effect.

This means NMN is not only safe—it also protects and supports the key cells that drive hair growth, helping build a solid foundation for new hair.
NMN does not rely on a single mechanism. Instead, it works through a well-coordinated system, attacking hair loss through four main pathways:
VEGF helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles. Research shows that NMN greatly increases VEGF levels in HDPCs—reaching amounts similar to minoxidil.
In simple terms, NMN helps build a stronger “delivery system” to feed hair follicles what they need to grow.

The Wnt/β-catenin pathway is essential for hair development and regrowth. NMN significantly increased β-catenin levels, effectively turning the hair-regrowth program back on.
Oxidative stress and inflammation slowly damage hair follicles over time. NMN helps by:

Together, these effects create a calmer, healthier environment where hair follicles can recover and grow.
In summary, NMN works through four major systems—blood supply (VEGF), hormone signaling (AR/DKK-1), hair regeneration pathways (Wnt/β-catenin), and protection against oxidative stress and inflammation.
By acting on all these areas together, NMN shows strong and well-rounded potential to slow down, reverse, and improve hair loss, making it a promising new option for hair growth.
